Fire Safety

Fire Prevention

Fire safety begins with ensuring all facilities contain the appropriate life safety systems (smoke detectors, sprinklers, extinguishers, etc.) and that these systems are in working order at all times. With operating systems in the buildings, it is the responsibility of all faculty, staff, students, and visitors to be knowledgeable of and follow appropriate procedures.

Life Safety Systems

Life safety systems are in place to reduce or eliminate the risk of injury or damage by monitoring the presence of smoke and fire or visibly mararking emergency exit pathways. The following are important guidelines to maximize the effectiveness of these systems:

  • DO keep corridors and doors clear of any objects that could block evacuation
  • DO store materials at least 18 inches away from a sprinkler
  • DO NOT keep stairway doors open or store materials in them. They should be closed and empty to prevent the spread of smoke and fire to other floors
  • DO NOT block access to fire extinguishers, fire alarm pull stations or any other emergency equipment
  • If any emergency equipment is in need of repairs or if you have any concerns contact your supervisor or Environmental Health & Safety (EHS)

Fire Evacuation

Fire spreads quickly, leaving you only minutes to safely evacuate. Know and regularly practice your building's evacuation plans so that you can be safe in the event of an emergency. When a fire alarm sounds, you must:

  • Immediately exit the building
  • Close doors behind you
  • Walk to the nearest exit (avoiding elevators)
  • Notify any emergency personnnel if suspect someone is injured or trapped inside the building
  • DO NOT re-enter the building until emergency personnel give the "all clear"
